| J. Max McKee is known for his hard-driving banjo picking. Widely known as "The King of the Hard Driving Banjo", he entertains audiences with a high energy show and a wide variety of traditional music including arrangements by Earl Scruggs, Ralph Stanley, Don Reno, Raymond Fairchild, among others. Max is an innovator, who's energy and mastery of the banjo is reflected in his own style. |

Max credits his early influences to Scruggs, Reno, and Hubert Davis. Performing since 1968, Max has been featured in Bluegrass Unlimited, and is a North Carolina banjo Champion. Several recording projects have been produced in corroboration with Raymond Fairchild and Curley Seckler. Randall Hylton wrote many of the songs that Max has recorded, however he also writes much of his own work. On every show, Max will do several numbers on guitar, and on occasion the mandolin.
Max and his wife Teena own and operate the Bluegrass Inn #2 in Shelby, North Carolina. Opened in 1985, the Bluegrass Inn #2 was the brainchild of Max and his mentor, Hubert Davis. Accompanying Max in the band are his wife Teena McKee who plays rhythm guitar and sings lead vocals. The most recent addition is Dean Marsh on bass. J. Max andTeena live in Shelby, North Carolina where Earl Scruggs and Snuffy Jenkins were raised.
All band members are full-time touring musicians and are members of SPBGMA, IBMA, AND SEBA. With their hearts in their music, the J. Max McKee band works tirelessly to produce a family-oriented, entertaining show for promoters and fans.
